New journal paper and conference presentation

The BCMI-MIdAS team are pleased to announce a new journal article in this issue of the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception, titled Affective Calibration of Musical Feature Sets in an Emotionally Intelligent Music Composition System.

The team also has a forthcoming conference paper, titled Affective Brain Computer Music Interfacing: A Case Study Of Use By An Individual With Huntington’s Disease to be presented at the 7th Graz BCI conference, Austria, later this year. Citations for both are available in the research page of the group website.

New journal article in Computers In Entertainment, feature in The Guardian

The BCMI-MIdAS team are pleased to announce another new journal article, this time in ACM's Computers In Entertainment. You don't need access to the ACM digital library as this (along with a couple of others from the special issues on musical metacreation) have been published live on the CiE website (free to access).

As this is a 'green access' publication we are also able to offer a downloadable pdf file if you would like to check it like that instead of using a web browser.


Also, the Reading group were recently featured demonstrating the new technology to rapper and producer Tinie Tempah, pictured, for a feature in The Guardian. See all the details here.

New journal article in Brain and Cognition (Elsevier)

The BCMI-MIdAS team are pleased to announce a new journal publication in Brain and Cognition, titled "Music-induced emotions can be predicted from a combination of brain activity and acoustic features"

Highlights

A combination of acoustic and neurophysiological features are used to attempt to predict music-induced emotion.
Significant prediction results are achieved.
These results are significantly better when a combination of features is used than either feature alone.
Features selected include alpha and beta band powers and mel-cepstral coefficients.

Forthcoming conference papers and Gadgetshow appearance

The BCMI-MIdAS team, fresh from hosting the BioMusic Symposium: Interfacing Brain, Music, and Emotions as part of the 10th Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival, in Plymouth, Devon, UK on 27 February 2015, have a number of forthcoming conference papers presenting progress from the project, which can be viewed on the research pages now.

Duncan Williams and Joel Eaton also presented a working demo of some of the music generation systems used in the MIdAS project for the first episode of the latest series of The Gadgetshow, which aired on Channel 5 in the UK on March 15th 2015. A clip from the show can be seen here.

Symposium: Interfacing Brain, Music, and Emotions


This symposium is aimed at discussing the state of the art in field of brain-computer music interfacing (BCMI). Scientists from the EPSRC-funded project ‘Brain-Computer Music Interface for Monitoring and Inducing Affective States’ join musicians and invited experts to review methods for analysis and monitoring of bioinformation associated with emotions, and techniques for generating music with a BCMI system aimed at inducing specific emotions on listeners.

The symposium forms part of the programme of the prestigious Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival, now in its 10th year:
